Light Beyond Borders: An Extraordinary Interfaith Water Project
Sabo Lugbe, Nigeria – 2024
In 2024, Rabbi Derli traveled to Nigeria to support the local Jewish community in the construction of
a Mikveh, a ritual bath central to Jewish spiritual life.
While investing in spiritual purification through water for one community, he became deeply aware
that many surrounding villages still lacked access to basic clean drinking water.
Moved by this reality, Rabbi Derli chose to extend his mission beyond its original purpose.
During the same visit, he financed the drilling of a borehole and the construction of a water
distribution center in the large village of Sabo Lugbe, home to a mixed population of Christian and
Muslim families. His decision reflected a powerful message: water is a universal gift, and dignity
must never be limited by faith or background.
Generously supported by a prominent Mexican philanthropic family, Cojab, the project now
provides sustainable access to clean water for approximately 3,189 people.
The inauguration took place during the Festival of Lights, Hanukkah, symbolizing hope and
renewal. The celebration brought together local leaders and families in a remarkable interfaith
moment. Traditional Hanukkah doughnuts were distributed, alongside rice and essential food
supplies offered especially to the widows of the village.
During the ceremony, Rabbi Derli spoke about water as a divine element created at the beginning
of the world—an element entrusted to humanity to develop and share for the betterment of society.
Interfaith prayers were recited with community leaders, highlighting unity, cooperation, and shared
responsibility.
