Strengthening Heritage and Community: Water Access for the Igbo Jewish Community
Nigeria – 2025
Moved by the story of local communities who identify as descendants of the Jewish people, a
dedicated donor chose to support a clean water initiative serving one of the Igbo Jewish
communities in Nigeria.
The project financed the drilling of a borehole within the grounds of a local synagogue, ensuring
reliable access to clean drinking water for the congregation and surrounding villages.
While the water infrastructure is located at the synagogue, the intention was never exclusive. The
installation was designed so that external taps extend beyond the synagogue’s perimeter, allowing
the broader local population to benefit freely from the water access.
The local Jewish community has assumed responsibility for maintaining the well and ensuring its
proper functioning, reinforcing both sustainability and shared accountability.
This initiative reflects a unique intersection of heritage, identity, and humanitarian
solidarity—strengthening a historic community while serving the needs of all.
